Donnie Cross is just a normal cat out of
Jackson, Mississippi, who makes good music. Who makes great music,
actually. I’m from a small neighborhood called Presidential
Hills. I rap. I produce. I have a label called Ambassador’s
Way Entertainment. I have a promotional company called MWA Promotions.
I have a production company with three other producers on staff.
It’s me, D Minus, Skertzo, and Exit Only.
Have u released anything lately ?
I have a solo album that I’m puttin’
out called Soundtrack Of My Soul. The first single on it was called
“Im a Hater.” I get a lot of questions about why I’m
callin’ myself a hater. If I don’t like your $400
jacket, then automatically, I’m a hater. That’s my
personal opinion. I think the phrase is being misused right now.
The song is basically about, no, I’m not conforming to your
norm. I’m an individual. It’s a metaphor for individualism.
If I was a hater, this is what would happen to u. I’d piss
on your couch and shit in your fridge. U know what I’m sayin
? It’s a comedy song, but serious at the same time. I have
a re-mix with Chyna White and Khujo Goodie from Goodie Mob. It’s
about to drop for 2006. My next Single is called, “Who You
Playin’ With.” It’s another serious but comedic
club-banger.
Is it true that David Banner thought the
Song, “I’m A Hater,” was aimed at him ?
(laughing) Yeah! Everybody’s speculating
that I’m talking bout Banner and different rappers in Mississippi.
I’m not talking about him. I’m glad u asked that.
I’m not talking about the dude. I know Banner. If there’s
problems with people from Mississippi, we can go knock on each
other’s door and talk about it. It’s nothing directed
towards David Banner.
What’s your connection to Charlie
Braxton ? He’s mentioned your name a few times.
He’s a good good friend. He’s
like my mentor. I actually met Charlie through Banner and Kamikaze.
We were all locked into a bad management deal. My group, Us From
Dirt, and their group, Crooked Lettaz. He actually told us we
were gettin’ screwed on the deal. From then on, we’ve
been good friends. He actually tells me when my song is whack.
He’s actually done a lot for Mississippi that people don’t
know about. I respect him and love him like a brother.
Do u do any production outside of your
own label and artists ?
Yeah ! I produce for a lot of cats outta
Mississippi. There’s a new cat coming out called Baby Stone
- I did a track on his album. I did some tracks for Khujo. I do
stuff for a lot of people, man.
Didn’t Apple pick up your track,
“I’m A Hater,” for their I-Tunes ?
Well, actually, it was a label out of California
called Avatar. They picked it up for I-Tunes. That’s doing
pretty good.
Are u well-connected with the mix-tape
djs ?
Man, I should be on every mix-tape and
song in the South. But I’m not there, yet. I’ve been
doin a lot of things with White Boy Pasol. He’s real hot
in Florida. My man Dirty Laundry out of Nashville.... Big ups
to him. I’ve done a lot of stuff for the Pure Pain camp.
That’s like my second family - Pure Pain. My people Street
Pharmacy, out in Texas have been layin’ it down for me,
too.
