Jacki - O

          By
Anthony Colom

Hey, how are u doin’ Anthony ? I’m cool. How are u doin
Jacki?
I’m fine. What’s been going on lately ? Just tryin’ to
finish up the album. Makin’ it tighter. And doin’ some more
features.
What are u calling your new album ? Poe Little
Rich Girl.
Hey, we’ve gotta congratulate your label, Poe
Boy, for inking a deal with TVT Records
. Oh, yeah, thanks !
Who’s gonna be featured on your album and who’s doin’
the production ?
Featured, we got : Trick Daddy, Jazze Pha,
Betty Wright, & Ying Yang Twins. The album is just getting
better and better. Production wise, we’ve got : Red Spyder,
Timbaland, Cool & Dre, Smurf, Scott Storch, Young Hollywood,
& Gorilla Tek. I hope I ain’t forgettin’ anybody. It’s just hard for
me to remember everybody. I’ve got an allstar line up.
How
long have u been in the business ?
I’ve been writing and
rapping since junior high school. I started off doin’ poetry. I got
up with Poe Boy about 5 years ago. I worked with some of the
other artists on the label. Like, Cognito; Brisco; and Rodney. As
far as getting serious about it, I would say I really got serious
about it - about 2 years ago.
Are u Poe Boy’s only female
artist ?
Yep, I’m the only one here. Are they overly
protective of  u, because your a female ?
Yeah, when we’re
in the streets, or when we have to do the clubs, they’re
watching out for me. It would be pretty hard for someone to get
up on me. But when we’re at home and in the studio, I don’t get
no special treatment. It’s get up and get your own. U know ?
Where’s home for u ? Miami (born and raised). What was it
like growing up in Miami ?
It was hard. Now that I’m able to
travel and see how other people are livin, u know, kids with
violin and piano practice. Kids with soccer practice....... u know,
we didn’t have that. When you’re growin’ up, a lot of times
you’re just happy with what you’ve got. U don’t really think about
what u don’t have.
How have u been received by people in
this industry ?
Wyclef got on my Nookie remix, just outta love.
So to have somebody like that, a platinum recording artist, show
me love... is really great. Trick Daddy, people like that, have
been showing me a whole lotta love.
U doin’ anything outside
of your music ?
Yes, I have a movie coming out. Its called
Tough Love. It’s being shot by Nomad Productions. I start
shooting in a couple of weeks. I play the lead role. It’s that
hustla’s world. My boyfriend goes to jail, so I have to take over
and run the business. It stars Clifton Powell and John Walsh
(from America’s Most Wanted).
Is that gonna be filmed in
Miami ?
Yeah, in Miami. Did u record your entire album in
Miami ?
No, I recorded “Break You Off,” (a Jazze Pha track) in
Atlanta. I’ve been featured on a lot of people’s stuff lately. I’m
on Ghostface Killa’s album (The Pretty Toney LP). I’m on Trick
Daddy’s new album. I’m really excited about my album, though.
That’ll be out this Summer.
Is there a release date, yet ? No
not yet. I’m thinking sometime in July.
Now u know I gotta ask
u about your song, “Pussy.” What made u wanna do that
track ?
Cause I wanted to do something that would get people’
s attention (laughing). Something a little bit naughty. Something
empowering women. It did what we wanted it to do. We got a lot
of people’s attention. And I got paid a lot of money (laughing). I
still get booked for that song. And it opened up a lot of doors
for me. So I don’t have no regrets about doin’ that song. I love
doing that song. Have u ever seen one of my shows ?
No, I
haven’t caught one, yet.
Oh, well u need to book me then.
Hey, I love to. Did u catch it from your mama or
grandmama, for doin’ that song ?
Naw, mama’s like .... u
better gone get out there and get them shows. As long as I’m
makin’ money, she’s happy for me. As long as she can help me
spend that money, she ain’t thinking bout that. She knows this
is my livelihood, and how I make my money. She keeps me
grounded.
If u have a daughter, and she comes to u and
says she wants to be in this business....... would u
encourage or discourage her ?
If she was at an age where
she was old enough to make her own decisions, then I would
stand behind her. But, if she’s 15 years old and says - this is
what I wanna do, then as a parent I would say no.
Do u think
this business is too rough for a 15 year old ?
Not if u have
good representation. It doesn’t matter if your 15 or 55. If don’t
have good people around u, it’s not gonna happen. That’s why I
was so glad that we signed with TVT. It’s like the whole team
around u is successful. U gotta surround yourself by people
who know what they’re doin’.
What’s the hardest thing you’
ve experienced about this business so far ?
Dealing with
promoters. A lot of em be with a lot of bullshit. They tell u one
thing, and when u get there it’s something else. Not only are u
there to make your money and get paid, but you’ve gotta worry
about your safety and your people’s safety. U have situations
where they send u the first half of your money, then when u get
there they don’t have the rest. Cause they’re tryin’ to wait until
the club fills up, so they can pay u the rest off the door. U know,
stuff like that.
What’s the biggest misconception that
people have about u ?
That I got beef with Trina. (Laughing)
That’s the biggest. I always get asked that question. They
automatically assume, that by our both being from Miami - (from
the same hood), that oh, they have to have beef with each
other. And that’s not true. Even with the song, “Slow Down,” I
pick fun at her a little bit. But it’s all in good fun. It’s just
entertainment. It’s nothing personal. She ain’t never done
nothing to me. It ain’t no beef.
Do u plan on touring
overseas ?
Yeah, I have to perform at some basketball
tournaments in London this Summer. When asked what female
artist they wanted, they chose me.
Well hey, we wish u
nothing but success with your new album, Poe Little Rich
Girl.
Thank u.
