OTL

          By
   Honey Love

What’s poppin’ OTL ? Notti : Well, the main thing is,
we just tryin’ to put a choke hold on all the major artists
and major labels out here. We just tryin to let em know,
that just like P.  did, and Cash Money did - there are
independents out here doin’ it just as big. We got plenty
of artists. We’re always lookin’ for more. We ain’t no
different. U know what I’m sayin ?
What’s your label
called ?
Notti : Smoke Houze. Who are some of the
folks on your label ?
Notti: Ben Franklin, Mahogany,
Kenna (an r&b artist), and a lot of the local artist out,
here in The Ham. Plaboi : He forgot somebody. Son Of
Man.
How long have u been in business ? Plaboi :
Roughly, about two years, now.
Are u both from
Birmingham ?
Plaboi: Yeah, we all from The Kitchen.
That’s the new name for Birmingham. That’s what
everyone’s callin’ it.
You did a track, “Stick Em,”  with
Pastor Troy, that’s gettin’ some play. How did you
hook up with him ?
Plaboi : The track was originally
done for David Banner. We were gonna get him to spit
on it. But we couldn’t get in contact with him. He had
other things he had to do. So, we needed another hot
artist. We came up with using Troy, collected some
numbers, got in contact with a few folks, and rolled on
from there. After we got to his studio, the rest is pretty
much history. He ended up liking the track, and asked us
to do a track for him. We tryin to keep a bridge between
us. This business today, ain’t so much about ya talent.
It’s about ya bread. U know ?  So yall doing ya own
production ? Yeah, we’ve got Touch Tonez Produc -
tions. So we got them tracks for anybody and
everybody. And umm.... we just ready to work, man. We
ain’t scared.
How’s the music scene around
Birmingham, now? Especially since Ruben
Studdard’s getting attention ?
Notti : It’s jumpin’ a
little bit better than it has been. U still have to get out
there and grind to get your material seen and heard. We
ain’t no Atlanta, yet. But we steppin’ in the right direction.
To me, there’s no other place (in Alabama) doin’ it like
“The Ham.” I mean, u still got Huntsville. U still got
Montgomery. But I don’t think any place has as much to
offer as “The Kitchen.”  I ain’t hatin’ on no other city. I
just gotta represent “The Kitchen.” U know ? Plaboi : Off
the top. There are a lot of artists around here, ready to
break out. A lot of folks come down here. Cause the
scene here, now, it’s kinda chunky. U got major artists
coming here to pick up independent artists now. And it
seems like the artists around here are workin’ with
bigger artists on a bigger scale now. It use to be, u
would just do a song with someone around your hood
and everything would be all tight. Notti : People gotta
understand, that a lot of the big boys don’t wanna mess
with u. Cause they don’t feel that you’re in the same
class. So for us to have dealt with some of the people
that we have, is a testament to how good we are, and
how good  “The Kitchen” is - as a whole.
What’s your
album called ?
Notti : The album is called Kountry
Pimpin’. Cause we do it just like that.
How would u
describe the sound of this album ?
Plaboi : Country
! Country! Notti: We tryin’ to get something that’s lackin’
from a lot of cds. And that’s continuity. From song to
song, we give u an insight as to what Kountry Pimpin’
really is. And everything blends real good. Plaboi : We
talk about the Cadillacs, cause that’s what everybody
talks about round here. We hit cha with the microtel.
Cause we ain’t bout to spend no $80 on a broad. U know
what I’m talkin’ bout ? And to speak on what my boy said,
most albums out today may have 3 hot singles on it.
Then the rest of the album is garbage.  We just so
focused on not doin’ that. We tryin’ to go back to the
SouthernPlayalistic days. When u had 8 straight jams on
an album. U know what I’m sayin ?
Who were some of
your influences growing up ?
Notti :  Run -
DMC, 8 Ball & MJG, and UGK. Plaboi : Cause they
touched on a lot of things that we had seen around the
city. I just wanna say that we gone show love to
everybody out “The Kitchen.” Shout outs to Birmingham
