Petey Pablo
Freek-A-Leekin

          By
Anthony Colom

What’s poppin’ Petey ? What’s
goin’ on with ya Boom Boy ?
Your new  cd is out, and it’s
hot.
How’s it going right now ?
It’s going great. The album
dropped May 4th. I’m glad to be back on the
scene, loved and accepted. The album’s off the
chain. I’m happy.
Who are some of the folks
that helped u get down on this one ?
Awh
man !!  I worked with Kanye West, Timbaland, Lil
Jon, and I did production on the album. Special
features.....I had Baby & TQ from Cash Money,
Missy Elliott, Bubba Sparxx, Bobby Green, and
Young Buck from G - Unit. Yeah, It was off the
chain.
I heard that for Mother’s Day, u bought
your mother some studio time.
Yeah man, I
didn’t do that for Mother’s Day. I have a studio at
home. Shit, somebody else said that to me the
other day. I’m not doin’ all that crazy stuff. My
mom can sing. And she’s always wanted to sing.
That’s one of her dreams. Now, I’m in a position
to do things for my family. I want my momma to
do this, whether the album sells 1 copy or 1 mil
lion. If anyone wants to get it, it’ll be accessible
thru my website. Her album ain’t ready. My web
site ain’t ready. So u know, it’ll all be ready when  i it’s
ready. It’s like an outlet for me and for her to
do this project.
I understand that u started out
as a singer.
Yeah man. I started singing before I
could talk. I come from a musical family and I
was raised in the church. U know, singing in the
choir and just being an active kid in the church
and in school.
Will u be doin’ any singing on
your mother’s album ?
U know what ? I don’t
think I will be. Because of the simple that a lot of
people try to use established artists to boost their
project. I want my momma to be able to stand up
on her own. U know what I mean ? I may be on a
song with her. This is her dream being fulfilled.
She’s already happy for me and what I’m doin’.
This gonna be a stand alone project.
We all
checked u out in the movie, Drumline. How’d
u get that gig ?
Uhm, u know what ? I have no
idea how that came about. And I still don’t know.
It was a big surprise to me. But I grateful. I was
shocked. Because I had just gotten into the
entertainment business, and then have another
big dream of  mine be
fufilled.... being a part
of a movie. My record label,
they brought this about,
some kind of a way or another.
U plan on starring in any
more movies?
Yeah ! Me and
Eddie Griffin, we’re workin’ on
two movies right now. And I’m
workin’ on three movies of my
own. I’m writing them myself.
As far as that acting goes,
yeah, I’m definitely steppin’ into
that. And uhm...... me and Will
Smith, we had spoke earlier
about me doin’ something of
my own. But uhh, with so much
going on in his life and my life...I guess it’s gone
work out when God wants it to work out.
What’s
next for Petey Pablo ?
Petey Pablo has a lot to
accomplish. And it seems like I have so little time
to do it in. U can expect the unexpected from me.
You’re originally from Greenville, North
Carolina, right ?
Greenville, North Carolina ....
born and raised.
What’s the music scene like
in North Carolina since Petey Pablo hit ? Are
any of the independent artists getting any
attention now ?
U know what ? I’m gonna tell u.
And I’m so glad u asked me that. Because I
opened the door for my people, yes they are get -
ting a lot of exposure  now. But I don’t know why
a lot of times your independent people don’t
wanna give thanks, or recognition to the people
who made it possible  for them. It’s like someone
asking an individual,  Are U from North Carolina ?
And they say yeah !  Then they open their mouth
and say “Fuck Petey Pablo,” or ain’t nobody
thinkin’ bout him. And it’s like...Dumb ass !!
Why would u talk that way about someone who’s
making it possible for yall ?  Why would u not
give appreciation to this individual ? So then the
light that was almost on they ass, is turned the
hell off. They ain’t even been nowhere, yet. Ain’t
nobody tryin’ to stand behind people that are dis
respectful. I’m going thru a situation right now
with the radio station in my hometown. We had a
little misunderstanding. But I tried to be the bigger
man about the situation. U can push a man only
so far. I mean, after everything that I could have
possibly done - we still had a problem. I’m
human, as well. So I lashed out and said some
stuff that I shouldn’t have said. U know what I
mean ? Well, I ain’t gone say I shouldn’t have
said it. Cause if it wasn’t meant to be said, then it
wouldn’t have come out of my mouth. So now
they’ve taken everything that Petey Pablo has
done - off the radio. And it’s really not hurting me.
It’s hurting the people who wanna hear it. I mean,
cause that’s only one town in North Carolina that
wants to act crazy about a comment  that I made.
And ya hurtin’ the fans. The fans  wanna hear the
songs. I already went to the radio  station and
explained to them the first time, that  hey, your
really not supporting me like u should, anyway.
It’s like, all my spins are comin’ from other
places. Like in California, I’m gettin 36 spins.
In Mississippi, I’m gettin’ 29 spins. In South
Carolina, I’m gettin’ 30 something spins. But right
here in my own hometown, you’re only playin my
record 4 times. U know what I’m sayin ? So,
you’re really not hurting me by taking my stuff off
the radio. You’re hurting the fans. And why
should u be so narrow - minded and so ignorant
about it, when it really didn’t have to go there. But
u know, I just pray about the situation and hope it
works itself out. We’ve all heard your song,
“Freek A Leek.”
What was the situation with
Lil Jon doing that track for u, and doin’ a sim-
ilar track, “Yeah,”  for Usher ?
It was an unfor-
tunate mishap that just so happened to work for
both of us. The Petey Pablo, Lil Jon, Usher situ-
ation.....man, I don’t have any animosity towards
them. Like I said, it was just an unfortunate
mishap that just so happened to hatch. U know
what I mean ? And work in everybody’s favor. I
guess at first, u know what mean, everybody’s
temperature was hot. And questions were stirred
up. But when you’ve got musical geniuses, as far
as Usher, Jon, and myself......It all works itself
out. Now, we could have very well acted ignorant
about it, and blowed the situation out of propor-
tion. But as men from the South. And as business
men. And as intelligent black individuals, we all
looked at the situation, we said what we had to
say about it, and we moved on. We were all big-
ger than that. This wasn’t the first time something
like this has happened. I remember one time,
Timbaland and Busta Rhymes both had songs
playin’ on the radio with the Night Rider beat. So
it’s no problem. We all still cool. We all still kick it.
Know what I mean ?
 O.K. !  Hey, we appreciate
this interview. Is there anything you’d like to
say to your fans before we let u go ?
Yeah !!
All my fans, I want u to realize that I don’t look at
u as my fans. I look at u as my family. Cause
without u, there would be no me. Cause u could
have very well given up and forgot about Petey
Pablo a long time ago. But u didn’t. So that
means I have an obligation to fulfill. And I swear
on everything I love that I’m gonna do my best to
fulfill that obligation. I love yall. Yall go get that
record. Yall watch out for The Cat and The Bird
Dog. And for everything that’s going down on The
Wright Brothers record. And if there’s anything
that I can do at any point and time...whether it’s a
hug or a handshake. Or if I have time, can I stop
by your church, by your school, or can I just
come and throw a cookout in your neighborhood.
And if there’s anyway that u can get in touch with
me, hey, it’s not a problem.
Hey, we appreciate
your time.
And I appreciate yall.
