Every now and then, an artist
comes along with a style
that is reminiscent of leg
ends, yet possesses a gift that the
world has not yet seen or heard. A
manifestation of music that touches
the soul, cleverly intertwined with
lyrics that deal with the realities of
life, love, and the heart. E-MAL is
an artist that possesses these tal -
ents. As rhythm and blues enters
the 21st century, it has been ques -
tionable whether or not this genre
of music will last. However, as an
up and coming male singer/song -
writer/producer, E-MAL is solid
proof that r&b has a very bright
future.
E-MAL was born in Tuskegee,
Alabama. During
this particular
time, Tuskegee
was home to the
supergroup, The
Commodores
and later, Lionel
Richie. Accord -
ing to E-MAL,
“Growing up dur
ing that time in
Tuskegee, there
was no way you
could not have
been influenced
by them. The
Commodores
served and still
serves as a con-
stant reminder
that with hard
work, dedica -
tion, and persis -
tence, I will take
my place in the
music industry.”
Being an only
child, E-MAL
sought music as
a form of self -
entertainment.
His parents encouraged his
interests in music at an early age.
E-MAL adds, “Both my mother
and father could sing well, and
I had cousins that played drums
So, I wanted to learn how to play
Within a short period of time, I was
playing drums.” In addition to
playing drums, E-MAL taught him -
self how to play the piano by ear,
achieving the aforementioned be -
fore age 12.
As far as his vocal talents are con -
cerned, E-MAL started singing in
church and in his high school choir.
It was in high school that E-MAL
started his quest to break into the
the recording industry. “I was in
numerous groups back in high
school. We were pretty good, but
we just did not have the guidance
in place to take us where we
needed to be,” says E-MAL. After
graduating from high school, he
received a choral scholarship at
Alabama State University in
Montgomery, Alabama. Jumping at
the opportunity to take his gift and
love for music to the next level,
E-MAL eagerly accepted the
scholarship. It turned out to be one
of the best decisions he ever made,
because the scholarship provided
an opportunity to be formally train -
ed in different areas of music. He
also had the privilege of opening
for such stars as Patti Labelle,
Brian McKnight, Goodie Mob,
Syleena Johnson, Mul - TY, and
Phil Perry. “Being exposed to and
studying different kinds of music,
such as jazz, classical, and gospel,
gave me a deeper sense of what I
wanted to do with my music. I think
I have taken different elements
from all of these types of music in
developing my style,” says E-MAL.
He began to learn more about the
business side of the music industry
so that he could be a self-contained
artist. After graduating cum laude
from college, E-MAL decided to
vigorously pursue his career in
music.
The music industry has been wait
ing on E-MAL to arrive. After years
of paying dues and polishing his
craft, the wait is over. His music is
blessed with the power of illustra
tion and emotion. His voice is rich,
cerebral, and refreshing in it’s deli -
very. E-MAL is ready to share his
vision and his music with the rest of
the world.
