While out in the ATL, I had a chance
2 sit down and talk 2 one of Atlanta’s own grinding men,
DJ Kizzy Rock. Kizzy gave us a one on one lesson about the grinding
that goes on with his music and in his life.
What can u tell our readers about yourself
?
KR: I started off doin’ mixtapes
as a dj, for Edward J. and some of Atlanta’s hottest clubs.
Later, I went on 2 pursue music as an artist, with a group called
A - Town Playas. That was around ‘93. Then I did a solo
deal with Tommy Boy Records. 2 singles were released, “Yeah
Shawty, Yeah,” and “Bounce With Yall.” Then
I did an album in ‘97 with Ichiban Records called Can’t
Stop The Rock.” It did fairly well. After that, I moved
2 the independent scene with my own label, Grand Champion in ‘99.
I learned a lot from the whole experience. Especially on the business
side. Later, after some trying times, I hooked up with my partner,
DJ Smurf (whom I knew for a while). He had a group called Ying
Yang Twins. I called him up, and he helped me out with my deal
at Koch, and now my current album, “The Realist,”
with the single “Twurkulator” is in stores.
What can we expect from u on your next
album ?
KR: Well, I’m gonna do another album,
but right now I’m more into investments. Like my mixtape
stores called The Trap. I’ve learned from my music experience
that u have 2 invest the money that u make, and that’s what
I’m doing. But in the meantime, I’m looking for new
producers with a fresh new sound.
You have any advice for the new young entrepreneurs
or artists ?
KR: My advice would be 2 keep God first,
stay around positive people who are making things happen, and
go 2 seminars 2 learn and network. But make sure u have your stuff
together. Like your demo package, so u don’t have 2 be in
a reps face just talking, cause the last thing industry people
want 2 do, is hear u talk. They wanna hear your product.
Who are u feelin’ in the state of
Georgia ?
KR: Well, this kat T.I. is hot. I would
like 2 work with him. Lil Scrappy, who’s with Lil’
Jon, that’s who I’m feelin’ right now.
Thanx DJ Kizzy Rock for choppin’
it up with us.
