| Remy Martin has traveled
a long road to her current success! Originally a protege of the
late Big Pun, she's recorded with the likes of Busta Rhymes, M.O.P.,
Fat Joe, and many others. After the folding of Loud Records, her
career seemed to be silenced! Back to prove that she never went
anywhere and that she's the rawest alive, Remy Talks to us about
her newfound role as a member of Fat Joe's Terror Squad and what
we can expect from their new album!
First of all, thanx so much for taking
the time out to talk to us!
Remy: Thank You
You've been through a lot of ups &
downs in your short career! Many people like myself have been
anticipating an album from you since you drop the fire on M.O.P's
Ante Up, but some still don't know your history and that you were
scouted by Big Pun! How did the two of you initially hook up?
Remy: He lived around the corner from my
mom. Pun was one of the millionaires that didn't wanna leave the
hood, so he bought a house across the street from the projects.
I met him through a mutual friend, and I flowed for him. He thought
I was crazy, and he said he'd call me back, and of course I'm
like yeah, ok. He called me the next day.
How close had the two of you become before
his death?
Remy: We became very close, I was with
him everyday until his death. Staying at his house, watching his
kids, everything., sharing my sandwiches with him. We were close
though.
What happened with the album and material
that you'd recorded while you were with Loud Records?
Remy: Well, after Loud shut down, we ended
up getting to keep the masters and everything. It wasn't my fault
that things went how they did, and we had put a lot of work into
that album, so they let me keep it and not have to start all over.
A lot of the stuff I tossed, but songs that I did with Pun, I
kept. You know, like some songs, it don't matter when they come
out, they hot.
How would you say that you have grown since
creating your first album?
Remy Martin: I've learned a lot about the
industry since then. A lot of times you don't really see what
it is. I learned a whole bunch about the business and the political
side.
I hear you recently ripped Lady Luck in
a freestyle battle. Can you tell me anything about that?
Remy Martin: Never heard of her. Nah, I'm
just playing. That was a little battle that we had. It was such
a big hit cause it was so much money involved with it, but moreless,
SHE LOST, I WON, and we never heard her again.
Well it seems like it definitely boosted
your popularity because people can't stop talking about you.
Remy Martin: I mean yeah, it was good as
far as people got a chance to hear me by myself. It don't hurt
when you have the #1 song out on the radio. I shit on her, and
I'm good.
What do you think you bring to the Terror
Squad Unit?
Remy: Shit, I don't know. If it passes
through me, it's all good. I'm the last resort. I'm the problem.
I'm the one who don't like anything. Everything is wack to me,
everything fucking sucks. I'm a hater. I hate on what I think
is wack. When everybody and your whole family is lying to you
saying you hot, I'm going to be the one to tell you no, you're
not hot. If it pass through me, then it's good.
You flow with the skill and confidence
of a rap veteran. I think that's why people have always been feeling
what you have to say. Also, with so many females pushing their
beauty to succeed in rap, you've established yourself solely with
your rhymes. It ain't no question that you're fine, but when people
talk about you, that's not what it's about.
Remy Martin: I love that about everything.
At the end of the day, it's about your skill. I ain't have Pun
like Kim had BIG. I ain't have Pun like Fox had Jay-Z. I never
had that. Like now, I'm with Joe, and when we're in a room together,
we're going at each other. It's not about how I look. I feel like
now I can wear just about anything, and people will be like, she
ripped that.
It's so many females rapping, but a lot
of them aren't really bringing heat. I like when you spit the
harder edged type flows. Do we get that from you on this album?
Remy: Every song that I'm on, people are
like, did you rip that. Let's be serious here, not many people
get more than one shot. I'm not playing around now.
So basically, what you're saying is that
I need to be at the store at 10am to get this cd right?
Remy: No, you need to be at the store at
12:01 tonight. 10am may be too late and it might be sold out by
then. My expectations are way high. I feel like the more high
you put your shit, the better. You succeed more that way. Some
people say they just want to go platinum, but fuck platinum. Fuck
diamond. I wanna do some shit that ain't never been done before.
I want to be the first, number one. I don't wanna be number two
to nobody. I wanna go as far as I can go. That's another reason
why it took me so long to do my album. It's all about timing,
and it wasn't my time. Everytime I talk about something, it fucks
up, so I'm gone just keep it quiet. Matter of fact, it's wack.
Buy it if you want (laughs). Buy it at 10:00 like you said(laughs)!
No, I'm going at 12:01. So when can we
expect an album from you?
Remy: Fourth quarter. I want to do something
like September, October, but I know it's going to be fourth quarter
cause we're doing the Terror Squad album. I'm sorry, but it's
definitely going to be this year.
Well make sure you do something with Busta,
because I think the two of you have some of the hottest chemistry
out there.
Remy: Oh definitely, I owe Busta big.
Was there anything else you wanted to
get out there that we haven't talked about?
Remy: Moreless, just check for me. I'm
not just a rapper, this is what I do. I'm doing what I love to
do. I got what the people want to hear, and it's different. It's
not gonna be on some Andre 3000 type of shit where people can't
understand. It'll be like "I understand why she thinks like
this, and that's why she slaps somebody on every song".
Well if it's up to me, you can keep slapping
'em.
Remy: Thank you James.
Well thanx so much for calling back and
all.
Remy: I'm sorry, and I'm gonna let them
know I talked to James Johnson and it's on and poppin when you
see him.
Thank you so much.
Remy: Alright, you have a nice day!
